Let’s Chat : Eco-Friendly Skincare Routine Changes

There is no doubt that one of the largest wastes I contribute with my skincare routine are used cotton rounds/squares. At minimum, I would use ~3 a day - one for my toner in the AM, one to remove my makeup in the PM, and one for my toner in the PM. One thing I’ve seen pop up a lot are reusable cotton rounds that can easily be thrown in the wash. As a slight germaphobe, I didn’t love the idea of this and preferred to use my disposable rounds for cleanliness purposes. However, over the last year I’ve really shifted my mind-set as I do want to do my best to be more conscientious of the waste I produce.

While I haven’t quite given up using cotton rounds to remove my makeup (as a waterproof eyeliner/mascara wearer, this is not one area I can budge on). I don’t f*ck with things going near my eyes and don’t want to risk an infection lol - also I wouldn’t want to stain a reusable cotton round (although I could always opt for a darker colored one).

At the beginning of quarantine I did pick up some cotton rounds when I was shopping small businesses - partially to make the minimum for shipping and partially to see if I could change my ways during quarantine. As I haven’t been going in for work daily, I’ve been wearing a lot less makeup and even going sans waterproof makeup. I’ve been attempting to just use double cleansers to remove my eye makeup and it’s been ok - using a bit of eye makeup remover on a q-tip to get any excess off near my lashes.

For the cotton rounds, I ended up getting these from Binu Binu. While they are nice with two different sides - one smoother and one more abrasive, this brand isn’t necessarily my favorite. For one, I’ve seen some brands sell their rounds with a washable mesh bag which I think would be extremely convenient. I did add this feedback on my IG and the brand was receptive, so hopefully they do implement that in the future! In the meantime, I’ve been utilizing my mesh undergarments bag to keep track of all of these and not have any get lost within my other laundry / machine lol. After washing them I was disappointed to see them shrivel up. I could probably iron them to make them more flat, but I really cannot be bothered. I am trying to implement these into my routine but in the meantime I am working on finishing up some rounds I have open before we move in a few weeks - less products + less things to move after all 🙃

Overall there are many ways all of us can do our part to help our environment, and this is one - especially for any skincare lovers out there.

What are your thoughts on reusable cotton rounds?
