Photo Diary: Schokoladen Museum / Köln, Germany

When I was doing my research for Köln (Cologne), one of the things I found to do and was most excited for was the Schokoladen Museum, aka the Chocolate Museum. YES. We had a few days scheduled in Köln so we had no issue spending a few hours at this museum. Luckily for us, most everything had German and English so we were able to read through the exhibits.

In short, the museum takes you through the history of chocolate - how it was found and how it’s made. You can even walk through an entire “exhibit” of how chocolate is made - from the cacao pod/bean into the little chocolate pieces we love and eat. Spoiler alert: we ate a looooot of chocolate (and T was good on chocolate for pretty much the rest of the trip lol).

A fun little surprise at the end is that you can make your own chocolate bar! Ok - not actually make it, but you can customize it. You grab a piece. of paper and you can add your toppings - I went with crisps, toffee, and freeze dried strawberries on milk chocolate. It actually does take quite some time so I would recommend skipping through to this, getting your bar ordered, and then perusing on through the museum afterwards. It took about 25 minutes for my bar to be ready and I can imagine that it could be even longer if there were more people in front of you. This area is right upstairs from the chocolate-making area so just walk up the stairs to get this started and then head on back down to look at each stage of how the chocolate is made. Pro tip (because I didn’t notice it before), above the register where you pay for your DIY chocolate bar are all the toppings in different jars so you can know what each topping actually is and looks like 😉

Have you ever been to Köln? Would you stop by to visit this chocolate factory?
