Rare Beauty First Impressions

Celebrities bringing out their own lines is very commonplace these days. When Selena Gomez announced that she was bringing out her makeup line, Rare Beauty, you know that the makeup community was buzzing to try them. While I am fortunate enough to receive a lot of PR from skincare brands, it isn’t as common for makeup brands (and I’m not too keen on getting tons of makeup at the slow rate I go through them).

With COVID leaving it’s mark on 2020, it has taken the majority of my makeup with it - unused and unloved lol. I’ve come to terms that most of my makeup is probably expired so it’s about time I start replacing things. I decided to pick a few things up from the range and here are my thoughts.

Hits

  • Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer (in 180W)| For a new brand I was pleasantly surprised to see such an inclusive shade range - a total of 48 shades. Now because it’s COVID and we’re not shopping in stores, it was a bit challenging for me to pick my correct shade. I did go with 180W which is described as a light with warm peach undertones. Typically I don’t like to return items so I try to get the shade correct the first time and also limit impulsive makeup purchases. Overall I think this is a tad light for me but Fall is here and I’m sure I’ll lose all color in my skin soon enough.

I did like that this product had an angled doe foot applicator which makes it easy to place the product exactly where you want it. I do find this product to be a bit more matte than other concealers I reach for, but I don’t mind it. I usually mix my concealers these days and use it as a light base since it’s not ideal to wear a full face of foundation under a mask. If you’re looking for a new concealer, I would recommend giving this one a try.

  • Soft Pinch Liquid Blush (in Joy) | This was quite possibly one of the products I was most excited to try. I opted for the shade ‘Joy’, which is described as a dewy muted peach, in the radiant finish. This stuff is extremely pigmented and if you use this I highly recommend you go in light and work your way up with this. I usually will go in with a light dab on each cheek and blend. This one is pretty easy to work into your skin and can easily be blended out with your foundation/concealer brush if you did go over the top.

Misses

  • Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner | I am an avid cat-eye liner wearer, so I have high standards for liquid liners. This one has a much thicker nib than I’m used to but it was quite easy to apply a perfect point. It’s almost thick enough that you could lay the pen down and swipe for that perfect triangle on the corner. Application wise, this one is great for beginners. Now my issue is with packaging - this one does easily twist off and come loose, which is just annoying. I also find that this does not have a good distribution of product flow. I didn’t reach for this for a few days and the next time I reached for it a huge amount of product. flowed out which just created a huge mess. I also don’t really think I have oily eyelids but this one smudged like crazy on me. Also if I teared up while yawning this one didn’t have the longest lifespan and would fade out around the corners of my eye by dinnertime. Sadly this one would be a pass for me too.

  • With Gratitude Dewy Lip Balm (in Appreciate) | This one completely missed the mark for me in terms of packaging and overall product. This one has the weakest magnet and I would not feel comfortable dropping this in my purse in fear that this would come uncapped and ruin the inside of my bag. In terms of product, I couldn’t even test this as the second I applied this to my lips I got a horrid taste of chemical soap (think - bubbles). I wiped this off immediately and have not looked back since. From a few others on IG, it seems like they also experienced this weird scent. Maybe it was a rank batch, but I would not recommend this one to anyone.

  • Liquid Touch Concealer Brush | Since I generally just apply concealer these days, I thought I would try out the concealer brush for spot concealing. I didn’t need another foundation brush as I’m quite happy with the ones I have. This one does have a nice angle which makes it easy to spot conceal around the nose, on the chin, and under the eyes. In terms of brushes, there wasn’t anything overly special about this that made the product apply much better. If you’re looking for a new brush, this one wasn’t bad in terms of application and price. But if you aren’t actively looking for one, this is definitely an easy pass.

Have you tried anything from Rare Beauty? If so, what were your thoughts?
